Step #1 of the Ten Steps to Getting Healthy
Eat more vegetables.
I'm very happy to know that it's getting more popular to get healthy. People are waking up to the fact that we have to take control of our own health, and there are many diets out there to help you along your journey, as I discussed in my last few posts. I think the problem now is that we hear so many things- do this. Do that. Don't do this or that. Do you ever wonder what you should do first? How to get started?
So, I'm writing this booklet that tells the first steps to take in order of importance. Now this booklet is based on my opinion, but after having studied the subject a few years, this is what I feel is most important.
You will remember I said the common denominator in the top diets is eating more vegetables. If you haven't heard of the Blue Zones, those are regions where people have the longest life spans. Their diets are filled with vegetables and beans. Everybody agrees we should consume more vegetables. There's a lot of "don't do"s but I believe if you start filling up with more "do's", the "don't's" will get crowded out. That's why my first step is vegetables.
If you've followed my posts very long, you know what I'm about. I feel like the Lord showed me ... Man was made from the ground and man must eat from the ground. Our bodies are the same composition as the ground. We are made up of minerals, and if the minerals are not replenished, our organs and tissues will not function properly. The only way to get these minerals is from the soil. The plants that grow in our gardens take up minerals from the soil and pass them on to us when we consume them.
Many scientists and doctors believe that most, if not all, of the diseases we see rampant today are caused by mineral deficiencies. I tend to agree. It's unbelievable, really, how seldom the average American eats vegetables.
A piece of lettuce on a hamburger? Fries? No deal. If I could only get people to see how important vegetables are! You must eat fiber to have a healthy colon. Where do you get fiber? From plants. Vegetables give us structured water. Vegetables give us the vitamins and minerals we need.
Our bodies and vegetables are like an old married couple. Very comfortable with each other. They finish each other's sentences. They know what their spouse needs and wants before they even ask. Our bodies have a craving that only vegetables can fill. The vegetables are consumed and digested in a perfect way. The body knows exactly how to uptake and utilize every nutrient. It's a beautiful symphony, really.
There's so much more I could say, but I must stop. I didn't mention fruits earlier, but fruit can go right along with the vegetables. So good for you!
Now. I want you to stop and really think. Ask yourself, "How many vegetables have I eaten in the last 3 days?" Don't count French fries. Don't count processed boxed items. It might surprise you.
I hope you can say, oh I'm good. I eat a plateful every day! If you see yourself lacking in this area, determine to eat more vegetables each day.
I've put this as step one. It is just one step. It's the best starting place. The next time you go grocery shopping, add one or two more kinds of vegetables to your cart. Try something new. There are lots of recipes online to help you make delicious dishes.
Until next time...
Enjoy God's providence!
